Unlike inclusions, which are internal characteristics, blemishes are external and can sometimes be polished away, although excessive polishing may alter the gem's shape and size. Here are some common types of blemishes found on natural sapphires:
- Scratches: Fine lines or marks on the surface that can affect the stone's luster and smoothness.
- Pits: Small, shallow depressions on the sapphire's surface, which can detract from its visual appeal.
- Nicks: Small chips or gouges along the edges or facets of the sapphire, often resulting from wear or the cutting process.
- Abrasion: Wearing or rubbing on the sapphire's facets or edges, making them appear dull and less defined.
- Fractures: Cracks that reach the surface of the sapphire, which can compromise its structural integrity and reduce its value.
While blemishes can affect a sapphire's beauty, minor surface imperfections are not uncommon and do not significantly detract from the gemstone's overall allure, especially if it displays vibrant color and good clarity.
